What is Ergonomics ?
Ergonomics is a way to make regular tools such as a mouse, keyboard and computer chair into tools that are designed to make your work environment more efficient. Ergonomically designed tools help prevent discomfort such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when your hand is placed in a uncomfortable position such that it presses down on your wrist and causes your blood stream to become blocked. Tools can be changed to become more ergonomic by adding more padding, grip, decreasing the weight and being adjustable. Ergonomic designs are for everybody in the population. For example, the walking cane that many elderly people use can be made more comfortable to hold and therefore, allowing them to walk long distances. Also, ergonomic wheelchairs that have light weigh wheels and more padding, make it easier for individuals to push themselves. In addition, keyboards are adjustable and have padding to provide comfort for students. Furniture and utensils are not the only things that need ergonomic designs but cell phones do as well (click here).
